The Effects of Lighting on Productivity

The effects of lighting on productivity have been broadly studied, and the results are that good lighting makes a big difference in workers’ concentration and output. The effects of poor lighting include eye strain and a less noticeable link to our internal clocks and sleep cycles.

Good office lighting has been shown to improve productivity in office workers by 16 percent and increase job satisfaction by up to 24 percent. Additionally, the correct use of lighting reduces energy costs and decreases office accidents by 52 percent, according to research by Gold Star Electrical.

Ideally, lighting designs should be selected in the office planning phase. Harsh lighting should be avoided, and natural light should be used whenever possible, both for its energy-saving effects and its mood-boosting properties.

Two of Maxim Lighting’s New Outdoor Lighting Products

Lighting professional Zvi Sperling possesses decades of experience in providing lighting solutions for buildings across California. Zvi Sperling is the executive vice president of Maxim Group Companies, which sells more than 6,000 lighting products.

Here are two of Maxim Lighting’s new outdoor products:

Breakwater one-light outdoor wall sconce

This outdoor light is a squared-off replica of coastal lighting. It has a flat top and an angular ring to shade and is constructed with powder-coated aluminum. It comes in black or a weathered-zinc finish. The frame can hold one 60-watt incandescent bulb. The sconce directs light downward.

Seaside one-light outdoor wall sconce

This seaside-inspired lighting system features a circular backplate that supports a dome-shaped hood with circular rings that extend downward. A long, oval, clear glass shade twist locks into the frame for easy maintenance. The aluminum and glass frame, with a black or weathered-zinc finish, can hold one incandescent 60-watt bulb, and can be installed in both nautical and industrial environments.

The Pros and Cons of Recessed Lighting

Based in Los Angeles, California, Zvi Sperling assists with leading Maxim Group Companies as vice president of sales and finance. Zvi Sperling joined the company shortly after graduating college in 1975, and helped the business expand from a single lighting company operating out of a garage to a group of several lighting businesses that sell everything from floor lamps to recessed lights.

Recessed lights usually range from about three to six inches in diameter, and are housed entirely in metal housings that extend above the ceiling line. Aside from the trim surrounding the bulb, most of the lighting fixture is hidden from view. This makes these lights great for illuminating an area without worrying much about the appearance of the lighting fixture and how it fits in a particular space.

In addition, recessed lights are perfect for low ceilings. This is because they do not come near to occupants’ heads, but still provide plenty of light to the area. They are also capable of providing full lighting coverage to a room, assuming enough of them are used.

However, there are some drawbacks of these lights. While recessed lights can illuminate an entire room, homeowners need a lot more recessed lights in a single space to keep their room from appearing darker along the walls. This is because, although recessed lights do a great job of casting light, the fact that they are in the ceiling limits the direction of the light. Rather than spreading around the room, recessed lights cast light directly downwards.

Another potential issue with recessed lighting is that it cannot be covered by insulation, since this could cause a fire. As a result, pockets of space around each light leak hot or cold air and reduce how energy efficient a home is.
